This is untrue as many up and coming bands have to write music that appeals to a wider audience - eg the single-buying public.
As time goes on and they become more mature, they can become more restrictive in their own style.

I'm really surprised by anyone who likes the Manic Street Preachers. We're talking about a band who said they hoped Michael Stipe "goes the same way as Freddie Mercury."
To say this about anybody is totally sick. Yet they still seem to be able to brainwash today's youth into liking their music.
