ALBUM REVIEW - DRAGLINE by PAW
After seeing this band's superb live performance earlier this year, I eagerly awaited the emergence of their album. There is only one way to describe Dragline - stunning.
Kansas' Paw are power-driven rock at its rawest. Heavy, raucous guitar combined with Mark Hennessey's rich, gravelly vocals laid over some killer melodies shining on Sleeping Bag, One More Bottle and Jessie with its inspired use of the pedal steel.
Elsewhere songs like Gasoline, The Bridge and Sugar Cane are brutal stabs of raw noise.
Granted, on the inlay card, with its photos of hay bales and grazing cattle, Paw do look like a bunch of farmers. Rather spookily, guitarist Grant Fitch looks a tad like Eric Clapton.
But all this aside, Dragline is an album that has enough brains to ensure that Paw should be pretty big in the rock scene.
Anyone who dares to call one of their songs "pansy" gets 10 out of 10 from me!!!

Dear Mega-zine,
I feel very strongly about the rivalry between pop stars/bands and fans.
There is always going to be rivalry between fans who support different pop acts like Take That and East 17.
Sometimes it goes too far and it ends in fighting which gives the band a bad name. It also spoils the enjoyment of other people who don't want rivalry.
I hope I speak for other people who agree with me.

Don't be afraid, Nick - let it all out!
10 REASONS WHY DANCE MUSIC IS SO COMPLETELY ABYSMAL!
- It all sounds the same
- Many songs are completely tuneless
- The moronic, incessant drum beat
- They always use drum machines
- Meaningless and repetitive lyrics
- You never see proper live musicians
- The songs lack any originality
- It's dominating & ruining the charts
- Quality bands get less airplay
- IT'S VERY BORING!!!

ALBUM REVIEW - DUSK by THE THE
Here they come! The dogs of lust. The world's finest are BACK with their best album to date. Matt Johnson continuing with his usual avant-garde class.
All tracks are perfection from the recent hit singles Slow Emotion Replay and Love Is Stronger Than Death to the sublime Lonely Planet and my favourite Dogs of Lust.
The atmosphere on this album is brilliant. It starts at an electrifying pace and gradually slows and mellows - and before you know it, the best part of an hour has gone!
It comes in the usual superb The The style packaging - an archetype. So, the only happiness this way lies... a must for anyone's collection.
Long may you continue, Matt.

NB Keep up the good work, 'Zine!
Long may YOU continue, Jim lad!

Dear Mega-zine,
I am a drummer in a band called Graf Spee who regularly play heavy metal to young people who love to headbang.
Not all our audience is metal heads - their musical tastes vary and they are aged 16 and 20. Not exactly "old fogies" as reported (Generator 24/8).
I think it unfair to judge people who headbang as "pains in the neck", "old fogies" and "has-beens".
